Referee of the Year 2022

Last year, we wrote of the many difficulties still facing our referees as a result of COVID-19. It would be nice to say that things are at last returning to normal. Nice, but ridiculously, hilariously untrue. Whether it’s the knock-on effects of earlier delays, exhaustion resulting from getting through recent years, or continuing ill health, the people we contact seem to be even busier and less able to referee for us. And for those who are able, doing so in the usual timeframe seems trickier than ever.

Which means that when a referee is consistently willing and able to provide wise and timely advice, it is difficult to do justice to the depth of our gratitude. Across 2022, one person rose above some stiff competition to win our referee of the year award. Kenneth Aizawa consistently demonstrated great generosity with his expertise, providing our editors with speedy and judicious advice and our authors with the sort of insight that brings out the best in their projects. We are tremendously grateful to Ken for his invaluable contribution to our discipline.

For their services to the community, winners of our Referee of the Year award not only get to bask in the fame and glamour inherent in the accolade, they also become lifetime honorary members of the British Society for the Philosophy of Science.
